Spring Festival
Spring Festival is the most important festival here in China. This festival celebrates the Lunar calendar new year and has been observed for centuries. The festival is actually 15 days.
This is the year of the ox.
Some interesting points to know:
- The festival begins with a large family dinner held on new years eve and the wife goes to the parent’s house of the husband
- On the third day family goes to home of parents of the wife
- Each day of the 15 days has a special notation
- New Year’s eve everyone watches the Gala on TV through mid-night. All of the major channels show the Gala.
- Families usually eat dumplings for dinner and breakfast and lunch.
- In most areas on the first day of the new year people first visit the home of the oldest person in the community
- In the villages and small communities there are usually a few men who come together in the square and play the drum and cymbals.
- The last day (15th) is Lantern Festival where lanterns of all shapes are hang for viewing.
